TUCSON, AZ (02.07.20) - The UT Dallas baseball team committed six errors, leading to seven unearned runs, as the Comets suffered a 16-6 loss to No. 1-ranked Chapman in the squad's second game at the Cactus Classics, held at the Kino Sports Complex.
The Comets (now 0-2) opened up the scoring bottom of the 1st with an RBI triple by
A.J. Liu, scoring
Chandler Boyd, but the defending NCAA Division III National Champions responded with nine unanswered runs to snag a 9-1 lead by the end of the fourth frame. UTD got back on the board in the 5th thanks to a Panther wild pitch but Chapman added two more runs in the top of the 6th to extend its lead to 11-2.
In bottom of the 6th, Liu picked up his second RBI of the afternoon with a double to left center, scoring
Luke Richter, but again the Panthers answered, this time with a three-run 7th. The Comets picked up another run in the 8th on another Chapman wild pitch and two final runs in the 9th on RBI hits by
Kaiden Lubojacky and Boyd.
The Comets managed 11 hits off of four Chapman hurlers with Liu closing the game 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI.
Kaden Ingram was 2-for-3 as the only other Comet with a multi-hit performance.
UTD closes the Cactus Classic at 3 p.m. (Central) Saturday with a meeting with Linfield.
