SHREVEPORT, LA (02.09.20) - The UT Dallas softball team got in the win column Sunday afternoon as the Comets split a non-conference doubleheader at Centenary. The Comets rallied for a 9-2 win over Centenary in Sunday's opener before falling in the night cap, 4-3.
The Comets (now 1-3) will continue non-conference play next weekend as they travel to Schreiner Saturday and Trinity Sunday.
GAME 1 - UTD 9, Centenary 2
Down 2-0 after five frames, the Comets exploded for an eight-run 6th inning and tacked on an insurance run in the 7th to earn a 9-2 win over Centenary to open Sunday's twin bill.
The Comets plated seven of their eight runs in the 6th with two outs, using five doubles and a two-run home run by
Avery Markley to turn the tables on the host Ladies.
Jessica Vlasek got UTD on the scoreboard with an RBI double down the left field line, scoring
Nicole Peters, and later scored on a
Kynsee Gesch single to left to even the game, 2-2.
Markley then blasted her first long ball as a Comet to push UTD to a 4-2 lead. The Comets then jumped on Centenary with single and four straight RBI doubles by
Elizabeth Brann,
Matee Simon, Peters and
Megan Todd to put the game away. UTD would add an RBI single from
Ashley Ambrosy in the 7th to complete the scoring.
Comet starter
Devyn Yanello picked up the win in the circle, scattering three hits with just one earned run in 5.0 innings of work. Yanello struck out five Ladies without a walk. Five Comets recorded multi-hit performances with Simon leading the way at 3-for-4.
GAME 2 - Centenary 4, UTD 3
An unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning led to a 4-3 loss by the Comets to Centenary to close Sunday's doubleheader.
Down 3-0 after the 1st, the Comets knotted the game with three runs in the top of the 2nd before both teams blanked each other until the final inning. Markley opened UTD's three-run 2nd frame with an infield single, scoring
Gabi Langille. Brann then tied the game, 3-3, with a single up the middle, plating Gesch and Markley.
UTD could not get another base runner past second base after its three-run explosion. The host Ladies loaded the bases in the 7th with a single, error and hit batter before Erin Lewis ended the game with an RBI single, scoring Kirstyn Gomez.
Peters finished the game 2-for-3 while Brann was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
