No. 21 Comets Fall Short Against UMHB in NCAA D-III Second Round

SAN ANTONIO, TX (03.07.20) - The 2019-20 season for the No. 21-ranked UT Dallas women's basketball team came to an end Saturday night with a 64-48 loss to conference foe and No. 14-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball National Championship, held at the Bell Athletic Center on the campus of Trinity University.

The Comets closed their campaign with a 23-6 overall record after advancing to a fourth straight national tournament. UTD kicked of the event Friday night with a stunning 74-69 upset of regional host and No. 16-ranked Trinity.

UTD shot a season-low 21.7 percent from the field in the loss, connecting on just 4-of-20 shots from three-point range. Freshman guard Jordan Maxwell came off the bench for a team-best 12 points while junior guard Kelley Skinner finished with 11 points. Senior guard Victoria Pena, the Comets' all-time leading scorer and rebounder, closed the loss with her fourth 'double-double' of the season, finishing with 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Comets and Cru traded leads early in the game, but a dismal second quarter led UTD to a 23-19 deficit at the break. The Comets managed just nine points on 4-of-13 shooting in the second period after leading UMHB by four points, 10-6, after the first 10 minutes of play.

The Cru (now 26-4) extended there lead to double digits near the midway of the third period en route to securing a 43-28 advantage heading into the final stanza. UTD again scored just nine points in the third, hitting  3-of-18 shots. Both teams found their stride in the fourth, but UTD could not find enough rhythm to mount a comeback.

The Comets earned an at-large berth into the national tournament this season and made the program's sixth-ever appearance in the event. UTD has won at least one tournament game in each of the past three seasons.
