RICHARDSON, TX (01.28.21) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team topped the century mark for the second straight game Thursday night as the Comets cruised to a 107-55 home win over Howard Payne in the squad's American Southwest Conference home opener.
The Comets (4-1, 2-1 ASC) set a program record with 68 rebounds against HPU, holding the winless Yellow Jackets (0-10, 0-6 ASC) to just 29 percent accuracy on the night, including just a 3-of-27 performance from three-point range. UTD scored 25 points off of 23 turnovers finished the victory with the most points by the program since a 113-73 home win over East Texas Baptist on Jan. 10, 2019.
Dimitrius Underwood and
Michael Forster both posted 'double-double' performances as the led five Comets in double digits in the lop-sided victory. Underwood finished with 20 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for his 33rd career 'double-double', six shy of the ASC all-time record (39), while Forster had 20 points as well along with 10 boards for his first 'double-double' of the season and seventh of his career.
Dylan Miles added 15 points,
Kelden Pruitt had 12 points and
Brady Boyd had 11 points.
Hunter Stevens led the Comets with six assists.
UTD opened the game on a 9-0 start and never looked back as the the squad took a 51-28 lead into the locker room. The Comets shot just 46.3 percent from the field over the first 20 minutes, but hit 5-of-14 three-pointers and collected 12 turnovers to second the 23-point cushion. UTD then rolled off the first 13 points of the second half to put the game away, extending their advantage to 64-28 at the 15:32 after a three-point play by Underwood on a break-away dunk.Â
The Comets continued to quickly pull away, taking a 40-point lead with just over 11 minutes left on the clock and widening their margin to as many as 59 points. UTD finished the night shooting just 46.2 percent from the field, but finished with a season-high 12 three-pointers.
UTD's 68 rebounds shatters the previous program record of 59, set twice over the past decade. The record was first set Jan. 2, 2014, against Louisiana College, and them matched on Feb. 1, 2016, against Ozarks.Â
The Comets return to action Saturday afternoon as they host Sul Ross State in another ASC crossover clash. Tip-off is 1 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
