RICHARDSON, TX (01.30.21) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team suffered its first home loss of the season Saturday afternoon as the Comets were handed an 85-77 defeat by Sul Ross State in American Southwest Conference crossover clash of last season's division champions.
Now 4-2 overall and 2-2 in ASC play, the Comets will look to bounce back with a pair of ASC East road games. UTD will visit LeTourneau Thursday night before heading to East Texas Baptist Saturday afternoon.
The Comets could not overcome a season-high 24 turnovers as they were chasing SRSU from behind for the entire second half. Down 41-36 at the half, UTD would find itself trailing by double digits, 59-49, by the midway point of the second half. The Comets made a final surge for the comeback attempt, slicing the Lobo lead to just five points, 79-74, as
Dimitrius Underwood capped a 6-0 run with a three-point play on a fast break lay up at the 2:47 mark. However, UTD managed just one field goal for the remainder of the contest, a three-pointer by
Hunter Stevens, as the Comets finished the game 1-for-5 from the field over the final two minutes.
UTD opened the game strong and led the Lobos by five points, 11-6, with 13:28 remaining in the opening half before SRSUÂ rolled off eight straight points to turn the tides. The two teams would trade leads six more times in the first period before the Comets trailed by five at the break.
Underwood led all scorers with 27 points on 10-of-18 shooting while adding eight assists, four steals and three rebounds. Brothers
Kameron Pruitt and
Kelden Pruitt each finished with 11 points while
Dylan Miles came off the bench for 10 points, hitting 3-of-4 three-pointers.
The Comets finished the game shooting 45.2 percent as a team, hitting 9-of-27 three-pointers, and were 12-of-16 from the free-throw line. SRSU would score 24 points off the 24 Comets turnovers.
