RICHARDSON, TX (11.13.21) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the young season after a 68-61 home win over Belhaven in the Comets' conference and home opener Saturday afternoon.
Donovan Souter led the Comets in scoring for the second straight game, pouring in 16 points, while
Kameron Pruitt recorded his third career 'double-double' with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebound. After trailing the Blazers (0-2, 0-1 ASC) by a single point at the break, UTD turned things around quickly early in the second half and then had to hold off BU down the stretch.
The Comets snagged an early 13-7 lead less than six minutes into the contest, but Belhaven answered with 16-2 run over the next six minutes to take control. The Blazers led the rest of the opening half, but
Thibaut Tagnon drained a pair of free throws with just 29 remaining before intermission to cut the deficit to one point, 28-27.
UTD regained the lead with the first bucket of the second period, a
Kolton Pruitt jumper with 19:13 on the clock, and traded leads with the Blazers over the nex few minutes before grabbing the lead for good with 17:24 to play on three free throws by Souter. The Comets snagged their first double-digit lead of the afternoon, 46-36, with a
Nick Donnelly pull-up jumper with just over 14 minutes to play and extended the lead to as many as 13 point by the final minute timeout.
The Blazers used a late 5-0 run late to draw back within single digits and drew within four points in the final minute before UTD seal the victory with free throws down the stretch.
The Comets shot just 29 percent from the field, but hit 23-of-26 shot from the line.
UTD returns to action next weekend with a two games at a classic hosted by Southwestern in Georgetown. The Comets will face host Southwester at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20, before playing Trinity the following day at 2 p.m.
