HOUSTON, TX (11.24.21) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team rebounded from its only loss of the season Wednesday afternoon with a 71-68 non-conference road victory over provisional NCAA D-III member St. Thomas.
Kolton Pruitt drained a three-pointer from the corner with 11 seconds left to play as the Comets (4-1) had to hold off host St. Thomas, despite managing an eight-point halftime advantage. The Celts (4-2) are in their final season of transition from NAIA to NCAA D-III.
The two teams traded leads through out the early stages of the contest before the Comets used a 10-0 run midway through the first half to grab a 25-15 cushion after a
Kameron Pruitt dunk with 9:03 left before the break. UTD limited the Celts to just three field goals over the final eight minutes of the first period en route to a 35-27 lead at the break.
UST opened the second half with a 18-4 run to snag a four-point lead, 45-39, with 12:32 remaining in the contest. The Celts would hold their lead until the 8:16 mark when
Donovan Souter drained a jumper to knot the game, 53-53. Souter's field goal would ignite a 6-0 run by the Comets, but UST would rally back once again.
The two squads traded a leads and battled through several ties before
Kolton Pruitt hit a lay up with 1:26 left to give the Comets the lead for good, 67-65. Pruitt's three-pointer then pushed the UTD cushion to five points before the Celts hit a late three-pointer.
Hunter Stevens connected on the first of two free throws with five seconds left to extend the Comets' lead back to three points and UST was unable to get off a clean shot to force overtime.
Kameron Pruitt led the Comets with 18 points while
Kolton Pruitt finished with 15 points and Souter added 14 points.
James Curtis led UTD with eight rebounds and three assists.
