No. 22 Comets Hold of Sul Ross State, Earn 3rd Straight Victory

RICHARDSON, TX (12.04.21) - The No. 22-ranked UT Dallas women's basketball team extended its winning streak to three games Saturday afternoon with an 80-70 home victory over Sul Ross State in ASC play.

The Comets (5-1, 4-0 ASC) continue to lead the ASC standings early in the season and will take nearly two weeks off before returning to action. UTD will next visit reigning ASC champion Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday, Dec. 16, in Belton.

Paris Kiser set a school record for free throws made in a game against the Lobos, hitting 17-of-21 free shots for a career-high 26 points for the Comets. Kiser was 4-for-9 from the field, hitting one three-pointer, and added six assists and five rebounds.

After a slow start, trailing SRSU by four points after the first period, Kiser and teammate Kaylee Boykin drained back-to-back treys to ignite a dominant second quarter for the Comets. UTD would outscore the Lobos, 26-8, in the second, shooting 7-for-11 as a team during the stanza. The Comets grabbed their first double-digit lead, 29-19, at the 3:42 mark of the second with a pair Kiser free shots, and held a 36-22 advantage at the break.

UTD extended its lead to as many as 19 points in the third before the Lobos (5-4, 1-3 ASC) rallied and cut their deficit to seven points, 53-46, heading to the final 10 minutes of play. SRSU trimmed the Comets to as few as five points, 56-51, early in the fourth before UTD rolled off a 9-0 run to take back control of the contest. The Comets hit 9-of-10 free throws in the final minute to hold on for the win.

Kiser's 17 made free throws broke the previous UTD record by two as former Comets Morgan Kilgore and Madi Hess each hit 15 free throws in a game during their careers. Kiser's 21 free-throws attempts was also a new mark for the program, breaking the previous record of 18 set by Hess during the 2013-14 campaign.

The Comets closed the game 29-of-38 from the line while shooting 46.9 percent (23-of-49) from the field. Boykin finished with 14 points while McKenzie Howard added 11 points. Anna Jefferson-Polk led the Comets with seven rebounds as UTD out-rebounded the Lady Lobos, 37-31.
