CLARKSVILLE, TX (02.27.21) - One game after tying the program's all-time scoring record, UT Dallas senior guard
Raenett Hughes became the Comets' outright career points leader Saturday afternoon as the No. 9-ranked Comets handled Ozarks, 81-63, in an American Southwest Conference road game.
A native of College Station, Hughes finished Saturday's victory with a team-best 14 points to give her 1,522 career points. Hughes officially broke the previous mark of 1,508 points, set last season by her former teammate
Victoria Pena. Hughes is currently averaging 15.1 points per game over her four-year career, just shy of that program record (15.5,
Morgan Kilgore).
The Comets (now 11-3, 7-2 ASC) got off to a slow start in their second game against Ozarks in four days, but took control of the contest later in the opening quarter to lead the Eagles 18-16 after the first 10 minutes of play. UTD took a double-digit lead by the 6:04 mark of the second period when Hughes pushed the Comets to a 29-18 lead on a fast break jumper. The Comets maintained that 11-point lead at the half, going into the locker room up 36-25.
UTD widened its lead to 14 points early in third and then outscored the Eagles, 26-18, in the fourth to pull away for the 19-point victory. The Comets' 81 points is the second-highest offensive output this season.
Hughes was 7-of-12 from the field to lead four Comets in double digits on the afternoon.
McKenzie Howard had 12 points,
Ziah Ambrose 11 and
Jordan Maxwell 10.
Kelley Skinner finished with 12 rebounds and six assists, both game highs.
The Comets return to action Thursday with a ASC crossover road game at McMurry. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m. in Abilene.
