RICHARDSON, TX (03.17.21) - The No. 6-ranked UT Dallas volleyball program remained perfect on the season Wednesday after a pair of 3-0 victories over Belhaven in American Southwest Conference East Division play.
The Comets (now 10-0, 10-0 ASC) Cruised to a quick 25-15, 25-10, 25-8, win over Belhaven in the first match of the day and followed up with a 25-11, 25-19, 25-12, sweep of the Blazers (now 4-10, 3-9 ASC) in the second contest.Traditionally, UTD wears white jerseys while at home, but opted for the green tops in honor of St. Patrick's Day. The Comets transitioned to black uniforms for match two.
MATCH 1 - UTD 3, BU 0
Gabi Sommerfield collected six total blocks as the Comets sailed to a brisk, 25-15, 25-10, 25-8, win over the Blazers to open Wednesday's twin bill.
Abby Jones led the Comets with 11 kills while Sommerfield added six kills of her own. Libero
Rachel Baxter collected a team-high 12 digs while Jones had 11. The Comets tallied 11 aces in the sweep, three of which by setter
Emma Sevening.
The Comets used three setters in the match with
Sydney Fitt leading the trio with 14 assists in just two sets. Sevening had 12 assists and
Izzy Sundquist finished with 11 assists. As a team, the Comets hit an impressing .453, topping .500 in the first and third stanza.
MATCH 2 - UTD 3, BU 0
The Comets weren't as dominant offensively in the second match of the day, but still managed a quick 25-11, 25-19, 25-12, sweep of Belhaven.
Catherine Croft sparked the Comets with 12 kills and a .360 hitting percentage while adding 11 digs and three blocks. Sommerfield finished with seven kills in the late match, adding three more blocks to her total (9) for the doubleheader. UTD hit .255 for the match, cooling off after an impressive .440 opening set.
Hannah Paine, who stepped in at libero for the final two sets of the afternoon, led the Comets with 14 digs.
Fitt dished out 18 assists, playing all three sets, while Seveninng had seven assists.
