SAN ANTONIO, TX (09.26.21) - The UT Dallas men's tennis team got back to the courts this weekend while competing at the ITA Southwest Regionals, hosted by Trinity.

The Comets sent six players to the regional event with John Edwards serving as one of the seeded players (#9-16) in the singles draw. Edwards and partner Ryan Au Yeung were also seeded (#5-8) in the doubles draw.

Edwards opened play with a first-round win over Mary Hardin-Baylor's Cody Aaron, 6-4, 6-1, but dropped a straight-set decision to Southwestern's Anton Borovik in the second round to conclude his singles run. Edwards and Au Yeung led off the doubles draw with an 8-5 win over LeTourneau's Nathan Schmidt/Ryan Holloway, but also suffered a loss in the second round.

In the singles draw, Au Yeung opened play with a 6-4, 7-6 (2), win over LeTourneau's Rodrigo Vasquez before falling to third-seeded Alex Pavkovich of Hardin-Simmons, 6-0, 6-4.

Carlos De Leon had the busiest weekend of any Comet as he advanced to the consolation final after dropping his opening match. After a tough three-set loss to seeded-player Oscar Roy of Southwestern, De Leon earned four victories to move on to the consolation finals before bowing out. De Leon downed Concordia Texas' Nico De La Pena, 6-1, 3-6, 10-2, in the first round of the back draw before ousting Nic Cusano of Mary Hardin-Baylor, 6-3, 6-3, in the second round. De Leon then picked up identical 6-2, 6-2, wins over Southwestern's Hemanshu Rambojun and LeTourneau's Ryan Lyles.

Aryan Sharma picked up two wins in the singles draw before exiting in the round of 16. Sharma opened the event with a 7-5, 6-0, win over Dorian Cudina of St. Thomas, and then held off Southwestern's Carlos Esteban, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 10-8, in the second round. Sharma's run came to an end, however, with a 6-2, 6-2, loss to seeded Christian Settles of Trinity.

Mario Dominguez opened the draw with a 6-1, 6-1, win over McMurry's Joseph Diaz, 6-1, 6-1, but fell in the second round to seeded Hao Nguyen of Trinity, 6-0, 6-3,

Nick Boquet dropped his first-round match to No. 2-seeded Hunter Bajoit of Southwestern, 6-3, 6-1, and fell in the opening round of the consolation bracket, 6-2, 6-4, to Hardin-Simmons' Josh Lopez.

Boquet and Sharma earned an 8-4 win in the first round of the doubles draw against Hunter Green/Micah Hunter of Howard Payne, 8-4, but fell in the second round to top-seeded Julian Lee/Patrick Baney of LeTourneau, 8-2. Dominguez and De Leon dropped the opening round doubles match to Chase Daniell/Reid Smith of McMurry, 8-3.

The Comets return to the courts Oct. 8 in the Collin College Tournament in Plano.
