Rana Hussein's Golden Goal Lifts Comets Past Dallas, 3-2

RICHARDSON, TX (09.03.21) - Rana Hussein netted the game-winning goal with 1:48 left in the second overtime period as the UT Dallas women's soccer team earned a thrilling 3-2 non-conference win over Dallas Friday night in the Comets' home opener.

After a stoppage due to a UD injury with just under two minutes left in the final extra frame, the Comets took advantage of a deep ball by Kelsey White which found its way inside the six-yard box and onto the foot of Hussein for the game-ender. With a collision in front of the Crusader goal, Hussein's touch was able to roll into the net to give UTD its first win of the fall.

The Comets (1-1) closed their home opener with a 27-10 shot advantage over UD, taking six of those shots over the two overtime periods. UTD had 13 shots on frame in the victory, compared to five by the Crusaders.

UD (0-1) opened the scoring in the fifth minute of the contest as Britney Zapata tallied the first goal of the night, unassisted. Sofia Munoz would net the equalizer in 19th minute as she broke behind the Crusader defense after a pass by teammate Stephanie Ward, forcing a 1-1 tie at the break.

The Comets took their first lead of the night in the 55th minute as Bella Granada made a long run from near midfield and beat the UD keeper one-on-one to push the home team to a 2-1 advantage. However, the Crusaders knotted the game in the 68th minute on an unassisted goal by Claire Reed after a Comet defensive miscue.

Sierra Foster and Keely Fillman each took a game-high five shots in the victory while Munoz and Josie Meeks each had four shots. Comet keeper Mariana Gonzalez made three saves.

The Comets return to the pitch Sunday night as they host Austin College in another non-conference affair. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at the UTD Soccer Field.
