ABILENE, Texas - The UT Dallas men's soccer team clenched a spot in the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament after defeating Hardin-Simmons 4-3 at the HSU Soccer Complex Saturday night.
The Comets (8-5-4, 4-3-2 ASC) secured the fourth seed and will host #5 Ozarks Tuesday, November 1 at 7 p.m. in Richardson.
The match started out in UTD's favor as junior forward
Brandon Buchanan and junior midfielder
Alan Beaney scored a 1:40 apart to give the Comets a 2-0 advantage in the 26th minute.
Kayson Marriott and
Leo Castro picked up assists on the goals.
The Cowboys (6-8-3, 5-4 ASC) answered with a Dario Gutierrez goal in the 37th minute and a score by J.J. Sissen in the 51st minute to knot up the game.
HSU's Jakob Fiol converted a penalty kick in the 57th minute to give the home team a 3-2 lead. Less than three minutes later, Buchanan converted a PK of his own.
Junior midfielder
Kane Kidwell gave the Comets the win on an unassisted goal with 59 seconds left in the contest.
For the game, UTD outshot HSU 23-13 overall and 10-8 on goal. The Cowboys led in corner kicks 5-4 and the Comets committed more fouls, 9-5.
UT Dallas Notes
- The game-winning goal by Kidwell was the second of his career. It was also the 10th career goal and seventh of the season for him.
- Buchanan recorded the second multiple-goal game of his career.
- Beaney had the second goal of his career.
- Marriott posted the second assist of the season and third of his career.
- Castro had his fourth assist of the season, which ties for the team lead, and second in as many games.
- Sophomore keeper
Michael Hesse tied his career-high with five saves.
- Marriott,
Adrian Solano and
Nate Patton logged all 90 minutes for the Comets.

- Osi Gutierrez and Maxwell Winneker recorded assists for the Cowboys.
- Gutierrez took three shots on goal.
- Ekene Odiaka had six saves in goal.
