UTD Opens ASC Play with 83-75 Win at HSU

ABILENE, Texas - The UT Dallas men's basketball team commenced American Southwest Conference play for the 2022-23 season with an 83-75 win at Hardin-Simmons at the Mabee Complex Saturday afternoon.

The two teams exchanged leads eight times with four ties through most of the first half. With the host Cowboys (1-2, 0-1 ASC) leading 31-30 at the 5:38 mark of the opening period, the Comets (3-1, 1-0 ASC) rattled off a 14-4 run to end the half and take a 44-35 advantage into the break. Graduate student guard Kyle Poerschke netted 21 points for UTD in the half.

The Comets led by as many as 17 with 5:55 remaining in the contest but the Cowboys cut it down to a six point deficit with 39 seconds left. Four free throws down the stretch by UTD sophomore guard Luke Kiser sealed the eight point win for the visitors.

The Comets continued their hot shooting streak, going over 50 percent for the third consecutive game. They shot 54.1 percent from the field (33-for-61), 9-for-22 from outside and 8-for-13 at the free throw line. UTD also had 39 rebounds, 20 assists, one block, six steals and 14 turnovers.

HSU shot 38.7 percent (24-for-62) overall, 7-of-24 from three-point range and 20-for-24 at the stripe to go with 33 rebounds, 11 assists, three blocks, seven steals and 10 turnovers.

UT Dallas Notes
- Poerschke finished with 25 points for the second consecutive contest, hitting five three-pointers. 
- Sophomore guard Caden McKenzie scored a season-high 10 points and pulled down five boards.
- Senior guard Hunter Stevens recorded eight points, six rebounds and six assists.
- Freshman forward Austin Page had eight points off the bench. 
- Senior forward James Curtis tallied seven points and a game-high seven rebounds. 
- Kiser was 6-for-6 at the line with two steals.
- Sophomore Rob Wade added seven points as the UTD bench accounted for 31 total.

Hardin-Simmons
- Forward Steven Quinn paced the Cowboys with 24 points and five assists. 
- Austin Brewer had 15 points and eight rebounds.
- Calaway Dykes scored 10 points.
