RICHARDSON, TX (02.15.22) - Despite season-high three-point shooting, the UT Dallas women's basketball team dropped a 76-73 decision to LeTourneau at home Tuesday night in ASC play.
The Comets (12-7, 11-5 ASC) continue to hold on to fourth place in the ASC after Tuesday's loss and will wrap up the regular season Thursday night with a road game at Ozarks. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m. in Clarksville, Ark.
UTD closed the night 10-for-22 from three-point range, shooting a season-best 45.5 percent from beyond the arc. The Comets were 8-of-15 from long range in the opening half with six players draining at least one three-pointer. However, UTD would enter the locker room trailing the visiting YellowJackets, 47-42.
The Comets controlled the opening period, leading by as many as seven points twice in the quarter before LETU battled back late in the first to trim the UTD lead to three points, 26-23, after 10 minutes of play. The Comets were 6-of-7 from three-point range in the quarter to take control, but the YellowJackets' late first quarter momentum carried into the second as LETU would grab the lead less than two minutes into the period and would hold the lead until midway through the third.
With 4:28 left in the third, a Tristan Clark lay up gave the Comets the first lead since early in the second, 52-51, but LETU responded with a trey by Kiara McElroy on its next possession to regain the lead. The YellowJackets held a 62-54 lead heading to the final period.
The Comets knotted the game, 66-66, with 5:33 remaining in the contest with a
Paris Kiser three-pointer, setting the tone for a wild finish as the two teams traded the lead four times over the final three minutes. With 1:10 on the clock,
McKenzie Howard's lay up gave the Comets a slim 73-72 lead, but the YellowJackets responded with a lay up by Kyndell Hardeman. Down 76-73 with 21 seconds left, the Comets had two late chances to extend the contest. However, a turnover and a blocked three-pointer on its next two possessions gave UTD its second loss in three outings.
Kiser and Howard both finished with 12 points to lead the Comets while
Anna Jefferson-Polk added 11 points.
Jordan Rudd finished with seven points along with seven rebounds and six assists, both team highs.
