ALPINE, TX (04.02.22) - Make no mistake, the UT Dallas bats are back!
The nationally-ranked Comets (20-6, 13-5 ASC) continued their offensive fireworks Saturday afternoon, completing a three-game American Southwest Conference sweep over Sul Ross State (10-14, 7-11 ASC) with a 17-6, "getaway day" victory over the host Lobos in eight innings.
UTD pounded out 14 hits, including a pair of doubles and two home runs to claim the finale win. In three games with the Lobos at historic Kokernot Field this weekend, the Comets scored a combined 49 runs, punishing the SRSU pitching staff for 55 hits. The series sweep stopped a four-game losing streak for UTD. The Comets next host the University of the Ozarks in another ASC series next weekend. The first game of the series is scheduled for 2 pm Friday at the UTD Baseball Field.
Much like last night's second game, the Comets overcame an early deficit with a pair of big innings early, then added a six-run frame in the 6th to pull away.
Leadoff hitter
Brayshon Savage and
Zac Vorst both powered home runs in the series finale while
Ramon Garza and
Keagan Vance each added three-hit afternoons. Freshman
Joshua Wood (W, 2-0), who threw three innings, picked up the win in relief.
Andrew Vorst and
Jake Jennings then nailed down the victory with four innings of scoreless relief, striking out four SRSU hitters.
After Savage singled and scored to give the Comets a 1-0 lead in the 1st, SRSU answered with four runs of their own to go up, 4-1, after one. But the Comet hitters erased that advantage quickly, scoring five runs in the 2nd on three hits to take a 6-4 lead. Garza and
Marcos Villegas each had RBI hits, and three more runs scored on a Lobo error and passed ball. The Comets then stretched the lead to 9-5 in the 3rd when UTD loaded the bases and got an RBI double from Garza.
After SRSU trimmed the lead to 9-6, UTD put up a six-spot in the 6th inning as 13 hitters came to the plate. The big blow in that inning was a three-run home run down the left field line by Vorst, followed by an RBI walk and another run coming home on a passed ball. UTD then added two more in the top of the 8th on the first home run of the year for Savage, pushing the lead past 10 runs. Jennings overcame a walk and Comet error in the 8th before ending the game one inning early with a double play.
