RICHARDSON, TX (04.29.22) - The UT Dallas women's tennis team will play for a third-straight conference title Saturday after a 5-1 win over Concordia Texas Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the 2022 ASC Women's Tennis Championship Tournament, played at the UTD Tennis Courts.
TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
The Comets (10-2) will face Hardin-Simmons at 11 a.m. Saturday in the ASC title match, in a meeting of the league's two divisional champions. UTD will be playing for its fourth all-time league title, claiming the hardware in 2013, 2019 and 2021. There was no ASC Tournament in 2020 due to COVID-19.
The doubles tandem of
Saumya Vedula and
Rebecca Jackson opened the match with a quick 8-1 win over CTX's Natalia Goodman and Kayla Pena at No. 2 doubles. Top-flighted
Samantha Wong and
Elyssa Ducret followed soon after with an 8-0 win over Isabella Wiik and Kaitlin Stevens to give the Comets a 2-0 lead.
The Tornados countered with an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles, forcing UTD to earn three singles victories to advance to the league finals.
Vedula was the first Comet to complete their straight-set singles win as she handled Claire Austin, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3.
Samantha Wong added a 6-0, 6-1, win over Pena at No. 1 before Nishino secure the team victory with a 6-1, 6-0, win over Wiik at No. 2.
At the conclusion of the match, Ducret (No. 4), Jackson (No. 5) and
Tisha Nakakes-Nguyen (No. 6) were all up a set.
