UTD Holds off ETBU in Battle for First Place

MARSHALL, Texas - The UT Dallas men's basketball team defeated East Texas Baptist 75-69 at Ornelas Gymnasium Thursday night in the battle of the first place teams of the American Southwest Conference. 

Graduate student guard Kyle Poerschke hit a three-point on the first possession of the game and the Comets (12-3, 7-1 ASC) continued to lead the rest of the contest. The visitors led by as many as 22 before taking a 40-22 advantage into halftime. 

The Tigers (12-3, 6-2 ASC) trailed by 23 early in the second period, then began to slowly chip at the deficit. A pair of three-pointers by guard Aaron Gregg in the final 12 seconds helped ETBU cut deficit to a four-point loss.

With the win, UTD is on top the ASC standings with 10 games left to play.

The Comets shot 40 percent (28-of-70) from the floor, 7-for-20 from three-point territory and 12-of-18 at the free throw line. They also recorded 46 rebounds, 15 assists, three blocks, 13 steals and 15 turnovers.

The Tigers shot 43.1 percent (25-for-58) overall, 5-for-19 from outside and 14-of-24 at the line with 39 boards, 11 assists, eight blocks, eight steals and 20 turnovers.

UT Dallas Notes
- Poerschke led all players with 25 points to go with five rebounds. It was the 13th double-digit scoring performance of the year and the seventh over 20 for the Houston native.
- Senior forward James Curtis hit double digits in scoring for the fourth time this season, scoring 11 points and going 3-for-5 from outside.
- Center Will Isaac added 10 points, nine rebounds, a block and a pair of steals.
- Senior Hunter Stevens finished with eight points and five assists.
- Sophomore guard Luke Kiser had six points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals.
- Sophomore forward Rob Wade chipped in six points and five rebounds off the bench.

East Texas Baptist Notes
- Gregg finished with 20 points and four assists.
- Kevin Charles recorded 14 points, eight boards and two blocks.
- Ryan Elzy had nine points, seven rebounds and four assists.
- Darry Moore finished with nine points, five rebounds and a pair of blocks.
