Volleyball Season Ends in ASC Tournament

BELTON, Texas - The UT Dallas 2023 volleyball season came to an end Thursday night in the Quarterfinals of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament at the Mayborn Campus Center. The third-seeded Comets (12-13) lost to Howard Payne (12-13) 20-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-20.

UTD jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first set and held on for the length of the frame. Freshman outside Bailey Schievelbein recorded eight kills and seven digs in the opening game.

The Lady Jackets took control of the second set early and held on to a 25-22 victory. The third set saw the teams exchange the lead seven times with 11 ties, including at 24-24 before HPU finished with the last two points. Howard Payne got up 11-3 in the fourth set and held onto the lead the rest of the way.

The Comets hit .154 for the match with 59 kills, two aces, five blocks and 90 digs. The Lady Jackets hit .172 with 44 kills, six aces, nine blocks and 79 digs.

Thursday finished the careers of six UTD seniors - Izzy Sundquist, Hannah Paine, Emma Sevening, Rachel Baxter, Lydia Knollmeyer and Erin Rogers.

UT Dallas Notes
- Schievelbein recorded 19 kills and 22 digs for her 10th double-double of the season.
- Sevening tied her career-high with 32 assists to go with 14 digs. She finished fifth on the UTD career assist list with 1,525.
- Baxter came up with 23 digs and moved into fifth in career digs at UTD with 1,320.
- Freshman middle blocker Kinsley Gates had a season-best 11 kills and a solo block.
- Rogers finished with 15 kills and a pair of blocks.
- Freshman Laura See had seven kills and four blocks.
- Mari Hernandez added 14 digs.

Howard Payne
- The Lady Jackets move on to Friday's Semifinal against East Texas Baptist.
- Makenzie Weddel led HPU with 11 kills and four aces.
- Brooke O'Neal had eight kills and four blocks.
- Madai Suarez also recorded eight kills with three blocks.
- Rylee Spencer hit .400 with six kills and a team-high five blocks.
- Addison Roden led the Lady Jackets with 23 assists.
- Brylee Awbrey had 21 digs to lead HPU.
