RICHARDSON, TX - A pitcher's duel between UT Dallas senior
Emilie Hoelscher and Mary Hardin-Baylor ace Kami Flores unraveled late for the Comets as the Cru erupted for a four-run 5th inning on its way to a 5-0 victory and sweep of the American Southwest Conference series Saturday afternoon.
UMHB (21-9, 14-3), which won the first two games of the three-game set Friday evening, 2-1 and 7-4, broke open a one-hit effort by Hoelscher in the frame with four runs on three hits and a pair of Comet errors to put the game out of reach. UTD (18-11, 11-7), which had stranded five runners through the first three innings, missed out on a chance in its half of the 4th to get on the board when a baserunner was picked off for one out, and a base hit was erased when a another player was not officially re-entered into the game.
The sweep moved the Cru to the top of the ASC standings while UTD dropped back into fourth place.
The Cru sent nine hitters to the plate in the 5th. A single, a hit batter and an errant throw that drew the first baseman off the bag loadeed the bases before Bailey Eggleston delivered a 2-RBI double to break the drought. then Izzy Guitterez followed with an RBI single. Another run came home on a stolen base attempt when neither of the middle infielders were in position to catch a throw from UTD catcher
Megan Todd.
Hoelscher (10-6) took the loss despite allowing just two earned runs in the 4.1-inning start.
Kassidie Rodriguez was able to finish the game with a 2.2-inning relief appearance, giving up just one run.
Freshman
Addison Caddell (2-for-3) was the only Comet with multiple hits, though
Sarah Lewis would have also had a pair had she been legally re-entered into the lineup in the 4th inning.
UTD is back in action Wednesday night with a non-conference road doubleheader at Austin College. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
