UTD Escapes with 99-98 Win Over HPU

RICHARDSON, Texas - The UT Dallas men's basketball came away with an exciting 99-98 victory against Howard Payne in American Southwest Conference competition Saturday afternoon at the UTD Activity Center.

The Yellow Jackets (10-8, 4-6 ASC) shot 60.5 percent (23-for-38) in the first and built a 13-point lead before going into the break with a 52-42 advantage.

The Comets (10-7, 6-2 ASC) changed the momentum by opening the second period with a 14-2 run over the first three minutes. From there, the teams would exchanged the lead five times with seven ties.

A fastbreak lay-up by junior guard Luke Kiser gave the Comets a 98-94 lead with 1:16 remaining. Armonie Ramey followed with a jump shot to cut the deficit to two points 13 seconds later. After a UTD turnover, HPU's Myles Brown scored with 24 seconds left to tie it up at 98-98. Sophomore center Austin Page gave the Comets a one-point lead at the free throw line with 5.5 seconds left. Forced to go the length of the court, the Yellow Jackets failed to get a shot off, giving the home team the victory.

For the game, UTD shot 49.3 percent (36-for-73) from the field, 10-of-31 from outside and 17-for-28 at the line. They also had 45 rebounds, 21 assists, 16 turnovers, four blocks and six steals.

HPU shot 53.3 percent (40-for-75) overall, 8-for-23 from three-point territory and 10-for-19 at the free throw line with 39 rebounds, 26 assists, nine turnovers, two blocks and 10 steals.

UT Dallas Notes
- The Comets improved to 22-12 all-time against the Yellow Jackets.
- Senior guard Donovan Souter led UTD with 23 points, hitting four three-pointers.
- Kiser finished with six points, seven assists and two steals while tying for the fifth-most assists in school history with 12.
- Freshman forward Jordan Balderaz had 15 points and nine rebounds. 
- Page scored 15 points and grabbed seven boards, five offensive.
- Junior forward Rob Wade scored 13 points.
- Nick Donnelly had 11 points, a block and a steal.
- Freshman guard Matthew Soto hit a pair of threes for six points.
- Junior center Tyler Stephenson blocked two shots and had a career-best five rebounds.

Howard Payne Notes
- Hudson Johnson led all players with 25 points, going 11-for-18 from the field, and had four assists.
- Jarod Johnson recorded 20 points, 11 assists, four rebounds and three steals.
- Ramey finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
- Chase Glasper went 7-for-9 shooting for 14 points and seven rebounds.
- Brown had 10 points and six rebounds.
