Comets Hang with Cowgirls in 3-2 Defeat

RICHARDSON, Texas - The UT Dallas women's soccer team fell just short against Hardin-Simmons, falling 3-2 at the UTD Soccer Field Thursday night.

The visiting Cowgirls (13-1-2), the top team in the American Southwest Conference, got on the board first with a Belle Floyd goal in the 16th minute, assisted by Caroline Burrow. 

The contest stayed 1-0 until Presleigh Thiessen connected with Lexi Templin in the 63rd minute to give HSU a two-goal advantage. 

Freshman forward Jules Chavez put the Comets (6-6-1) in the scoring column in the 71st minute. She converted a beautiful, arching free kick into the upper left corner of the goal from 32 yards out.

Aras King gave the the Cowgirls a 3-1 cushion in the 78th minute. Chavez struck again with 4:54 remaining in the game, this dribbling in open space and arching a kick to the right of the goal from the middle of the box.

The shot tallies were almost even, with HSU holding a 20-17 lead overall and 11-9 in shots on target. UTD led in corner kick chances, 8-4.

- Chavez leads the Comets with eight goals on the season with her third multiple-score game of the year.
- Chavez took 10 shots, seven on goal.
- Rowen Hughes and Layla Rangel each recorded a shot on target.
- Senior keeper Jade Press came up with eight saves and needs 18 more over the final three games to gain the Comet career record.
- Chelsea Vilca, Amelia Griffin, Kaley Robison and Chavez each played all 90 minutes.

Hardin-Simmons Notes
- Templin's goal was her 11th of the season.
- King scored for the fourth consecutive game.
- Kaylee Maddox added three shots on goal.
- Jenna Russell recorded six saves at keeper.
-  Mercy Mummert, who assisted the game-winner, and Lauren Stengel played the entire contest.

Up Next
UTD will play in its final home game of the year against Howard Payne at 5 p.m. The Comets will honor six seniors before the contest.
