UTD Limits Sul Ross' Offense in Double-Header Sweep

RICHARDSON, Texas - The UT Dallas softball team opened a three-game series against Sul Ross State with a double-header sweep at UTD Softball Field Friday. The Comets (12-7) only gave up nine hits on the day to the Lobos (9-11), winning 2-1 and 7-1.

Game 1
Senior left fielder Alexia Mullen led off the bottom of the first with a bunt single, moved to second on a base hit and scored the first run of the day on a Cadence Hernandez base hit down the right field line.

SRSU tied the contest at 1-1 with two outs in the third. Kyndell Garcia drew a walk, stole second and after a dropped foul ball that should have ended the inning, Ciera Avila drove her in on a base hit up the middle.

Junior second baseman MiKayla Hoffman led the bottom of the fourth off with a single, moved to second on a ground ball and third on an Olivia Reed base hit to center. Kailey Gonzales pinch ran for Reed and stole second, but the throw from the Lobo catcher was wild, allowing Hoffman to score what proved to be the winning run.

Sul Ross threatened in the sixth as catcher Adriana Hernandez drew a walk and was ran for by Janel Luna. With two outs in the inning Toni Mishnick doubled to the center field wall, but Luna was thrown out at home on by after a relay from center fielder Cole Johnson to shortstop Erin Ledesma and tagged out by catcher Celeste Soliz.

Junior McKenzie Cutbirth (8-0) picked up the victory in the circle, while Leanza Chambers (4-4) took the loss.

Game 2
The Lobos got on the board in the top of the first when Avila drove in leadoff hitter Vivien Jimenez with a double. That was the only run Sul Ross would score in the nightcap.

UTD took the lead with two runs in the second, thanks to an run-scoring grounder by Marisa Mejia and a RBI-double from catcher Gracelyn Taylor. They added three more runs in the third on four hits and an error. Hernandez drove in a run with a single to center in the frame.

Johnson and Hoffman hit back-to-back sol home runs in the fifth for the final runs of the game.

Freshman Allison Koch (2-3) earned the win in the circle, while Trevino (1-5) took the loss.
