RICHARDSON, Texas - The UT Dallas women's tennis team won its sixth overall and fifth consecutive American Southwest Conference title, defeating Mary Hardin-Baylor 5-1 at the UTD Tennis Courts Saturday afternoon.
The Comets (10-5) also won the championship in 2013, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023.
With the win, UTD earn the ASC's automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship Tournament, which begins Friday, May 10. The Comets will find out who and where they play with the selections on NCAA.com Monday, May 6 at 11 a.m.
The Comets started the Finals by sweeping through doubles. The top team of seniors
Rebecca Jackson and
Saumya Vedula defeated Jolin Ha and Jalon Burns 8-2.
Juniors
Megan Zeng and
Elyssa Ducret topped Erin Kittredge and Bailee Lane 8-1 at number two and
Jhastine Red Ballado and
Elsha Valluru teamed up in the third spot to take care of Emily Higgs and Zoe Male 8-3.
Needing just two singles victories to take the match from the Cru (14-3), freshman
Reika Nagai earned the first point 6-2, 6-1 over Lori Bryan at number three. The clinching victory came at number two, where freshman
Riya Matharoo defeated Male 6-2, 6-4.
Vedula was selected as the tournament's most valuable player. Ducret, Nagai and Matharoo were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
