ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The UT Dallas women's tennis team defeated Albright 5-0 in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament at the Brigade Sports Complex on the campus of the United States Naval Academy Friday afternoon.
With the victory, the Comets (11-5) advance to Saturday's Second Round match with #12 Washington and Lee at 2 p.m. on the campus of Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. This will be UTD's fifth consecutive trip to NCAA Second Round.
The Comets took all three matches from the Lions (18-3) out of the Middle Atlantic Conference. The number three team of
Jhastine Red Ballado and
Elsha Valluru defeated Elicia Aponte and Alizabeth Zarnofsky 8-0. Juniors
Elyssa Ducret and
Megan Zeng topped Alaina Smith and Michelle Timothy 8-0 at number two and seniors
Rebecca Jackson and
Saumya Vedula were an 8-3 victory over Alex Pancu and Valeria Sanchez in the top flight.
Vedula, coming an American Southwest Conference Tournament MVP performance, won 6-0, 6-0 over Sanchez in fourth singles. Ducret wrapped up the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Zarnofsky at six.
As a team, Ducret and Zeng are now 11-4 on the season while Ballado and Valluri are 10-3. Ducret also improved to 10-2 in singles play.
