UTD Outlasted by Regis

DENVER - The UT Dallas men's basketball team lost to Regis (Colo.) 97- at the Regis University Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.

The Comets (0-4) built an early 15-6 lead over the first 4:35 of the game. The host Rangers (1-3) managed to come back to tie it up at 40-40 going into halftime.

The teams exchanged five ties and seven lead changes in begin the second half before Regis went on an 8-1 run to take a 70-62 advantage with 9:21 to play.

They pushed the lead to 80-69 with 5:42 remaining when UTD went on a 12-5 rally to go down by four with 2:47 left. 

With 1:25 on the clock, the Rangers, who only dressed seven players, had their third player foul out, and were forced to go the rest of the way with only four athletes on the floor. Jordan Balderaz' lay-up and free throw on the play made the game 89-84. 

In the final 1:17, the Regis went 6-for-6 at the line and hit a lay-up, while the Comets hit three-pointers from Matthew Soto, Peyton Dulin and Zach Spitzer - which was with seven seconds left to make it a two-point game. Dyland Forbord made the final two free throws of the game with four seconds left to seal the victory for the Rangers.

The Comets shot 40.8 percent (31-for-76) from the field, 10-of-33 from three-point territory and 67.7 percent at the line. They also had 42 rebounds, 15 assists, seven turnovers, four blocks and six steals.

The Rangers shot 56.9 percent (29-of-51) overall, 10-of-19 from three and 29-of-33 at the free throw line with 24 rebounds, 23 assists, 10 turnovers, four blocks and two steals.

UT Dallas Performances
- Balderaz led the Comets with 17 points and had eight rebounds, six of which were offensive.
- Dulin recorded 16 points, six assists and a block.
- Spitzer finished with 12 points and six rebounds.
- Freshman center Hudson Goellner added 10 points and five boards.
- Jacob Smithey recorded nine points, six rebounds and two steals.
- Bryce Potts also scored nine points with a pair of steals off the bench.

Regis Performances
- Cooper Frith scored 38 points, going 7-for-11 from the field, and making a program-record 22 free throws.
- Luke Soden posted 20 points, six rebounds and four assists.
- Myles Shields had 13 points and two blocks.
- Matt Yost added 10 points and six rebounds.
- Gunner Walters had seven points and eight assists.

UTD will play its first home game of the year against East Central on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
