VIERA, Fla. - On the second day of the Space Coast College Games, the UT Dallas softball team split with Southern Connecticut State at USSSA Space Coast Stadium Monday afternoon. The Owls (9-3) took the first game 14-11 in eight innings with the Comets (8-6) taking game two 9-3.
Game 1
SCSUÂ put a five-spot on the scoreboard in the top of the first, which included a three-run double by Olivia Young.
Mikayla Hoffman led the bottom of the inning off by getting hit by a pitch, stole second then moved to third on a wild pitch. She later crossed the plate on a
Gracelyn Taylor ground out.Â
The Owls picked up another run in the second but the Comets managed four runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning. Hoffman came up with a two-run triple and scored on a
Sarah Olenick sac bunt to make the game 6-5.
Dominique DeLutri tripled and scored on a passed ball to give SCSU a 7-5 advantage in the fifth. A RBI-double off of Young's bat in the top of the seventh gave the Owls an 8-5 lead.
The Comets forced extra innings with three runs on four hits an an error in the seventh. Catcher
Avery Martin led off with a double and scored on an error. Hoffman then doubled and Olenick singled and stole second, allowing
Addison Caddell to knot the game with a base hit to right field.
Southern Connecticut had a six-run eighth inning, taking advantage of four hits and two errors. Rachel Miller had a two-run base hit and Sophia Angiolini singled, scoring two with another run coming in on an error for the big blows.Â
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Martin singled in pinch runner
Julia Guerrero then
Claire Pollack tripled in Martin to make it 14-10. Hoffman singled through the left side to plate Pollack for the final 14-11 tally.
SCSU outhit UTD 17-13. The Comets recorded three doubles and two triples, while the Owls had five doubles and one triple.
Miller (1-0) earned the win in relief, throwing five innings and giving up five hits and three earned runs.
Madelyn Denn (5-2) took the loss, lasting 7.2 innings in the start.Â
Game 2
The teams exchanged runs off of errors in the first inning of the nightcap. Martin led off the second with a double to center and scored on a base hit by right fielder
Cole Johnson to go up 2-1. Izzy Ingersoll tied the game in the bottom of half with a run-scoring single.
UTD came up with a five-run fourth inning on four hits and an error. Martin led off again with a triple and was driven in with a Johnson double.
Blair Collier reached on a bunt single, moving Johnson to third and Pollack reached on sac bunt, scoring Johnson. Collier and Pollack scored after a fielders choice and error with Hoffman up. Olenick singled up the middle allowing Hoffman to score. SCSU added one more run in the bottom of fourth to make the contest 7-3.
Pollack and Olenick posted RBI-singles in the sixth for the final 9-3 score.
The Comets outhit the Owls 13-6 in the game, including a 5-1 advantage in extra base knocks.Â
Freshman
Brooke Bouldin (1-1) earned her first collegiate victory, allowing three hits, one run and one walk with one strikeout over 4.1 innings or relief. Starter Giselle DeLutri (3-2) took the loss for the Owls, giving up seven hits, five earned runs and walk with two Ks.
UT Dallas Notes
- Martin finished the day 6-for-8 with five runs scored, one RBI, two doubles and a triple.
- Hoffman went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, three RBI, a double, a triple and a stolen base in game one.
- Olenick had a hit and two stolen bases in the opener then went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a double in game two.
- Johnson was 3-for-4 with two RBI, a double and a steal in game two.
- Pollack had three total hits, four runs scored, a triple, a sac bunt, a stolen base and four RBI.

Southern Connecticut State Notes
- Young was 2-for-4 with four RBI and two doubles in game one.
- Ingersoll was 5-for-8 with two doubles four runs and two driven in on the day.
- Spinelli finished with five hits on the day.
