UTD Wins Both Space Coast Contests on Tuesday

VIERA, Fla. - The UT Dallas softball team extended its winning streak to three games after picking up a 7-6 victory in eight innings over Saint Anselm and a 15-6, five-inning win against Post at the USSSA Space Coast Complex Tuesday.

For the fourth time in five games, the Comets (10-6) went to extra innings at the Space Coast College Games. 

The game was tied at three each before the Hawks came up with a three-run bottom of the sixth. The inning was highlighted by a two-run single by first baseman Sam Wiberg and a triple from Brooke Tardugno.

Sophomore Blair Collier led the top of the seventh off with a bunt. With one out, Collier moved to third after on an error of Sarah Olenick's ground ball. Junior Avery Martin double to center field, clearing the bases to make the deficit 6-5. Addison Caddell followed with a base hit to right center, allowing Martin to tie the game. 

Sophomore reliever Allison Koch allowed a hit and walk before getting out of the bottom of the seventh, forcing extra innings.

With Cole Johnson starting the eighth on second base due to the international tiebreaker rule, Claire Pollack knocked her in with single on the right field line, giving the Comets a 7-6 advantage.

Freshman Madelyn Denn came in for the save opportunity in the bottom of the eighth. Wiberg led off with a single to center field, but Katie Fox, who started on second base, was gunned out at the plate by Pollack for the first out of the inning. Denn followed by inducing a line out, gave up an infield single, then ended the game with a ground ball.

UTD outhit Saint Anselm 14-12. Koch (2-2) earned the win, striking out a career-best seven batters, while giving up eight hits, four runs and two walks over 5.2 innings. Denn picked up her second save of the season.

Pollack was 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI, a double and a stolen base. Martin was 3-for-4 with a double and two driven in. Caddell and Collier each had two hits as well.

Wiberg was 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored for the Hawks. Audrey Arsenault was 2-for-4 and Alyssa Wironen was also 2-for-4. 

Kendra Lee (2-2) took the loss by pitching the eighth inning. Starter Sam Ryan went seven innings, allowing 12 hits, five earned runs and a walk with one strikeout.

The Eagles took advantage of an error in the first inning, getting out to a 2-0 lead. The Comets answered with five runs in the bottom of the first and five more in the second. Julia Maniscalco and Cole Johnson each posted two-run singles in the first. Mikayla Hoffman led the second off with a single to right field and scored on the three-base error. Gracelyn Taylor had a two-run triple and Pollack doubled in a run in the second as well.

Post added three more runs in the fourth to make the game 10-5. UTD recorded its third five-run frame in the bottom half to go up 15-5. Freshman catcher Angela Hamilton recorded a three-run triple in the rally. The Eagles added one more run in the fifth for the final 15-6 score.

UTD outhit Post 11-5. The Comets have recorded 10 or more hits in each of the last four contests.

Freshman Erika Fedak (2-0) earned the win with three strikeouts over 1.1 innings of relief. She gave up two hits and one run. Katie Hart started and struck out four in 3.2 innings. Meghan McGurk (0-3) allowed nine hits, nine earned runs, a walk and three strikeouts in two innings in the loss.

Caddell went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a double. Maniscalco was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Allysa Calabrese was 2-for-3 with a triple, run batted in and run scored for Post.
