RICHARDSON, Texas - The UT Dallas softball team took the first game of a home double-header 4-1 from Mary Hardin-Baylor at UTD Softball Field Friday evening. The Comets (5-3) then fell to the Cru (11-3) 11-4 in the nightcap.
Game 1
UMHB scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth when first baseman Bailey Frenzel led off with a single and pinch runner Ava Jolley stole second. Catcher Tori Skinner followed with a hit to left, driving in Jolley.
In the fifth, senior right fielder
Cole Johnson led off with a base hit and was bunted to second by
Blair Collier. Freshman shortstop
Sarah Olenick followed with an infield single, moving Johnson to third.
Mikayla Hoffman doubled down the left field line, clearing the bases. First baseman
Julia Maniscalco knocked in Hoffman with a base hit then
Claire Pollack singled.
Addison Caddell drove in Maniscalco with with single through the left side to give the Comets a 4-1 lead.
Freshman hurler
Madelyn Denn improved to 4-0 on the year, striking out seven and allowing five hits one walk in the complete game effort. Chloee Miller (2-1) suffered the loss for the Cru.
UTD outhit UMHB 10-5.
Game 2
Mary Hardin-Baylor outhit UT Dallas 11-9, drew six walks and took advantage of three errors. They plated three runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and six more in the sixth to take a 10-0 lead.
Frenzel hit a grand slam in the top of the sixth for the Cru's big blow.
The Comets avoided a run-rule decision with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Johnson led off with a double and scored on
Kasey McAtee's pinch hit double. Olenick was hit by a pitch and Hoffman drove in
Blair Collier, running for McAtee, with another single. Caddell also had a two-run single up the middle, scoring Hoffman and pinch runner
Holly Selldin.
UMHB managed one more run in the seventh for the final 11-4 tally.
Elleigh White (3-1) earned the win in the circle, while
Allison Koch (1-1) was tagged with the loss.
UT Dallas Notes
- Hoffman was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles in game one. She had four hits and three RBI on the day.
- McAtee's RBI-double was her first collegiate hit.
- Maniscalco was 3-for-5 with a double.
- Caddell recorded three hits, three RBI and a triple.
- Denn is now 4-0 on the season and gave up her first earned run in the opener. She has a 0.30 ERA on the season after starting with 20.1 innings without an earned run.
Mary Hardin-Baylor Notes
- Frenzel was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, five RBI and the grand slam in game two.
- Skinner went 5-for-7 on the day with two RBI, two stolen bases, a double and two runs scored.Â
- Right fielder Shorey Nguyen had three hits with two runs scored and a steal.
- White threw 5.2 innings, allowing five hits, two runs and two strikeouts.Â
- Bryton White struck out three batters and allowed two hits in a scoreless seventh inning of game two.
