SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The UT Dallas baseball team lost the second game of a four-game series 6-4 in seven innings to St. Mary's at Dickson Stadium on Saturday.
The host Rattlers (7-1 Lone Star Conference) got on the board in the bottom of the first after Ashton Beaird led off with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Garrett Brooks.Â
In the top of the second, the game was halted for more than three hours due to rain and lightning. StMUÂ went up 3-0 on a two-run homer from Matt Guana in the second.
The Comets (6-2 LSC) cut the deficit to a single run in the top of the third. Freshman third baseman
Gavin Barker singled and
Albert Garza drew a walk to start the frame. An error on a
Jake Amoroso ground ball loaded the bases. Sophomore catcher
Kole Kinnison drew a walk, scoring Barker. Left fielder
Chris Benavidez recorded a sac fly to center, plating Garza.
UTD went up 4-3 in the sixth when
Nico Fernandez singled and scored on an
Austin Wallace double and Barker drove in Wallace with a grounder.Â
Guana singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth and was lifted for pinch runner Jimmy Mowles, who moved to second on a wild pitch. Mowles scored on an Ethan Hughes infield single, tying the game at 4-4. Later in the Rathien Malone singled in Garrett Ticer to put the Rattlers up. Brooks connected on a sacrifice fly, plating Malone for the 6-4 win.
Both teams recorded seven hits.
UT Dallas Performances
- Barker was 2-for-3 with a double, run scored and RBI.

Trent McCown went 2-for-4.
- Kinnison drew a pair of walks.
- Garza had one hit, walked and stole a base.
- Senior
Kasey Klyng (1-1) took the loss, allowing two runs, three hits and a walk with three strikeotus in 2.2 innings.
St. Mary's Performances
- Christian Molinar earned the win with a strikeout, walk and hit allowed in one inning of relief.
- Gabe Cook picked up his third save of the year by getting the final out.
- Guana was 2-for-3 with two RBI and the home run.
- Malone was 2-for-2 with a triple, run, RBI and walk.
- Brookes recorded two sac flies.
Up Next
The Comets and Rattlers will wrap up the series with a seven-inning game at noon on Sunday, followed by a nine-inning contest.
