PORTALES, N.M. - The UT Dallas men's basketball team went on a 13-4 rally in the final minutes of the game, but could not overtake #10 Eastern New Mexico in a 97-87 loss at the Steve Loy Family Foundation Arena Saturday afternoon.
The Greyhounds (21-3, 14-2 Lone Star Conference) led 89-74 with 2:23 remaining before the Comets (6-17, 5-10 LSC) went on a run that cut the deficit to six with 37 seconds left. Three-pointers by
Jordan Balderaz and
Matthew Soto, along with Soto combining with
Peyton Dulin for five three throws highlighted the rally.
Hudson Goellner's layup capped the run to make the game 93-87.
A dunk by ENMU post Jose Murillo pushed the lead back to eight points. The Comets missed a shot on their next possession and Mo Austin sealed the 10-point victory with a pair of free throws.Â
UTD started the game with a 13-5 lead over the first 4:16 of the contest. The Greyhounds came back to lead 41-33 at halftime.
The Comets shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57) overall and had a season-best 50.0 three-point percentage, going 13-of-26. They were also 20-of-27 at the line with 28 rebounds, 16 assists, 17 turnovers, one blocked shot and two steals.
The Greyhounds shot 55.2 percent (32-of-58) from the floor, 6-of-12 from outside and 27-of-33 at the line with 33 boards, 15 assists, 11 turnovers, five blocks and 10 steals.
UT Dallas Performances
- Balderaz was 7-for-10 shooting and 8-of-10 at the line for 24 points, one off his career best. He also hit a pair of threes and recorded four assists.
- Soto finished with 20 points, going 5-for-8 from beyond the arc.Â
- Dulin recorded 13 points, four rebounds and three assists.
- Freshman guard
Will Warren added 12 points and five assists.
- Junior forward
Zach Spitzer pulled down nine rebounds with a block, a steal and five points.
Eastern New Mexico Performances
- Austin led ENMU with 21 points, 9 assists and 5 steals. He went 11-for-12 at the free throw line.
- Austin Abrams was 8-for-11 from the field for 20 points and four assists.Â
- Treyvon Byrd had 18 points, nine rebounds and two steals.
- Murillo finished with 17 points, seven boards and three blocks
