TYLER, Texas - UT Dallas first-year
Joan Jerono broke the women's 5K record by 24.1 seconds at the UT Tyler Cross Country Invitational at Texas Rose Horse Park Saturday morning.
Jerono, making her Comet debut, placed second overall in 18:11.4, finishing 4.5 seconds off the lead. She helped UTD finish third with 57 points. They finished behind host UTT (35) and Weatherford (39) in the seven-team race.
Fellow first-year runner
Marianna Salazar was seventh in 19:39.2 and
Lili-Mai Pigeon took eighth in 19:42.0
Bharvi Varu was 22nd with a time of 20:47.8 and
Ellie Suo-Anttila rounded out the scoring in 21:03.3 in 24th place.
The UT Dallas men finished second with 51 points, just behind UT Tyler (17) and ahead of LeTourneau (90) in the seven-team field.
Second-year runner
Alan Sutherland paced the Comets with an 8K mark of 27:10.6, finishing sixth.
Anthony Stuart was 12th in 27:25.5 and
Sebastian Calderon-Espinosa completed the course in 27:56.7 for a 19th-place finish.
Dev Kumar finished 21st in 27:58.2, and
Jonathan Marsh finished 23rd in 28:10.1.
The Comets will compete again on Friday, September 11 at the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station.
