PLANO, TX (10.10.11) - The UT Dallas men's and women's tennis teams wrapped up the fall schedule over the weekend as the Comets competed in the Collin College Open. The event paired off the Comets against some of the top NCAA Division II, Division III and junior college competition in the region.
On the men's side, Giulherme Portela found success in Flight 5 singles, downing Southeastern Oklahoma's Jonathan Rodriguez, 7-5, 6-0, to advance to the semifinals. Portela then lost to Tyler JC's Jacob Rother, 6-0, 6-2, in the semis. In Flight 6,
Josh Minns,
Eric Matthewson and
Kirby Chenkin were all victorious in the first round with Chenkin then knocking out Matthewson in the semifinals. Minns earned a 7-6, 6-3, win over Collin College's James Flores in the opening round, but later fell, 6-0, 6-0, to Tyler JC's George Rivers.
Chenkin earned a 6-1, 6-2, win over LeTourneau's Taylor Gregoire and then ousted Arkansas-Fort Smith's Patrick Meador, 6-2, 6-0, to reach the semifinals. Matthewson defeated Fort Smith's Braden Eads, 6-1, 6-1, before downing Southeastern Oklahoma's Zack Bradford, 6-4, 6-3. Minnes defeated Matthewson, 6-3, 6-3, but dropped to Rivers, 6-2, 6-4, in the finals.
David Yeh dropped his opening match in Flight 3, but went on to win the consolation bracket. Yeh downed LeTourneau's Josh Bailey, 8-3, in the opening round of the consolation bracket and then defeated Dallas Baptist's Chris Braaten, 8-5, to get to the finals. Yeh then downed Joshua Marx (unattached), 8-2, in the title match.
In men's doubles, the duo of Wyane Change and
Amish Menon picked up a first-round win in Flight 2, downing East Central's Chad Morgan and Phillip Nelson, 8-6, but dropped a second-round match to Fort Smith's Pedro Carvalho and Martin Tabler, 8-5. No other doubles squads were able to collect wins.
For the women,
Alisha Lorren was the only Comet to pick up a single win in the championship bracket, that coming in Flight 6. Lorren downed North Central Texas College's Taylor Watson, 6-4, 6-1, but fell to Dallas Baptist's Aranne Goddard, 6-1, 6-2, in the second round. Six other Comets dropped opening round match, but only one was able to pick up a win in the consolation bracket. After dropping her opening match in Flight 3,
Rachel Houston blanked LeTourneau's Ali Goodwin, 8-0, in the consolation bracket, but then fell, 8-0, to Northeastern State's Sara Trott.
In doubles, the tandem of
Lauren Diaz and
Cindy Tiu earned a first-round win in Flight 3, downing Southeastern Oklahoma's Amanda Gomes/Hannah Layman, 8-4, but fell to Northeastern's Trott/Tiana Skalusevic, 8-2, in the second round. In Flight 2 consolation, Lorren and
Megan Tan teamed up to win three matches and claim the title. After dropping the opening match, the duo downed East Central's Gentry Fisher/Augostina Moran, 8-4, in the consolation bracket's first round. They then advanced to the finals when top-seeded Barbora Jirickova and Jeanne Mallem of Northeastern State pulled out due to injury. Lorren/Tan downed NCTC's Jordan Chandler/Sarah Palacio, 8-4, in the finals. In Flight 3,
Stephanie Lu and
Mindy Tiu also dropped their first round match and advanced to the consolation semis after an 8-6 win over Southeastern Oklahoma's Leslie Denis/Fabola Juarez. But, the duo fell to SOSU's Gomes/Hanna Layman, 8-5, in the finals.
