ABILENE, TX (02.26.11) - The UT Dallas men's and women's tennis teams returned to the courts Saturday for their first road matches of the season. The Comet men picked up a big 5-4 win over HSU while the women fell, 6-3.
MEN - UTD 5, Hardin-Simmons 4 (BOX SCORE)
The Comets won all three doubles matches as they improved to 2-1 on the season with hard-fought 5-4 road win at Hardin-Simmons. Sophomore
Bryan Leib and senior
Clint Laukhuf also both picked up singles wins to secure the road victory. Leib downed HSU's Emmanuel Navejas, 7-6, 7-6 (5), at No. 2 singles, while Laukhuf edged Gavin Ybarra, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4 singles.
In doubles action, senior
Sebastian Letiz and freshman
Jeffrey Trinh downed Sean Strehlow/Erich Bein, 8-4, Leib and
Ian Lucio defeated Cullen Dees/Tony Record, 8-3, and Laukhuf and freshman
Wayne Chang edged Nevajas/Ybarra, 8-6.
WOMEN - Hardin-Simmons 6, UTD 3 (BOX SCORE)
The Comet women (2-1) were handed their first loss of the season as they dropped a 6-3 decision at Hardin-Simmons. Sophomores
Rachel Houston and
Megan Tan each picked up singles wins while freshmen
Mindy Tiu and
Jean-Jean Gwo teamed up for a win at No. 2 doubles.
Houston earned a 6-4, 6-3, win over HSU' s Lauren Jay at No. 2 singles, and Tan battled back to down Danielle Cochran, 2-6, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4 singles. Tiu/Gwo held off Jay/Cochran, 8-3.
The UTD men and women return to action Tuesday, March 1, when the Comets host Dallas Baptist in non-conference action. The matches are scheduled for 3 p.m. at the UTD Courts.
