ABILENE, TX (09.18.11) – The UT Dallas men's and women's tennis teams opened the fall portion of their schedule over the weekend while participating in the 2011 American Southwest Conference Individual Championships.
Men's Results
Singles – Flight #1
Bryan Leib dropped his opening round match with Texas Lutheran's Sanio Dizdarevic, 7-5, 6-4, but responded with two wins in the consolation bracket. After a win over Ozark's Jason Morgan, Leib downed Sul Ross State's Chris Villafranco, 6-1, 6-0, for the consolation title.
Singles – Flight #2
Amish Menon won his opening match against Howard Payne's Luis Vallecillo, 6-2, 6-2, but had his play ended in the second round. Menon dropped a three-set decision, 6-4, 2-6, 10-6, to McMurry's Casjen Rico in the second round.
Singles – Flight #3
Sander Kaasjager easily handled East Texas Baptist's Jonathan Appleton, 6-0, 6-1, in the first round, but like Menon was booted in the second round in three sets. Kaasjager fell to Hardin-Simmons' Cullen Dees, 4-6, 7-5, 10-2.
Singles – Flight #4
David Yeh downed LeTourneau's Taylor Schultz, 6-0, 6-1, before dropping a straight-set match in the second round. Yeh lost to Mississippi College's Chris Wooten in the second round, 6-3, 6-4.
Singles – Flight #5
Ashish Kulkarni picked up a pair of wins before falling in the semifinals. Kulkarni opened the event with win over East Texas Baptist's Jeff Holl before downing McMurry's Alex Johnson, 6-1, 6-1, in the second round. Kulkarni lost to Hardin-Simmons' Gavin Ybarra, 6-2, 6-0, in the semifinals.
Singles – Flight #6
Ian Lucio dropped his opening round match with Ozarks' Greg Knaggs but responded with a 6-4, 6-2, win over Centenary's John Reeks to advance to the consolation finals. In that match, Lucio fell to Mary Hardin-Baylor's James Turner, 6-1, 6-5.
Doubles – Flight #1
The tandem of Leib and Kaasjager opened the bracket with a win over LeTourneau's Carlos Cantu/Josh Bailey, 9-8, but dropped the second round match. In the second round, Leib/Kaasjager fell to Mary Hardin-Baylor's Will Summers/Josh Pownall, 8-5.
Doubles – Flight #2
Menon and Lucio advanced to the championship game, but fell to Texas-Tyler's Rob Hodous/Kevin Wright, 9-7, for the title. Menon/Lucio opened the bracket with an 8-2 win over Sul Ross State's Johnathan Cruz/Grant Browning and then defeated Hardin-Simmons' Tony Record/Michael McCullough, 3-1 (withdrawal) in the second round. In the semifinals, Menon/Lucio downed Howard Payne's Luis Valecillo/Jacob Cadena, 8-6.
Doubles – Flight #3
The duo of Yeh and Kulkarni opened the bracket with an 8-2 win over Howard Payne's Carlo Flores/Andrew Harding and then downed Texas Lutheran's Austin Angeleri/Thomas Borum, 8-5, in the second round. In the semifinals, however, Yeh/Kulkarni fell, 8-2, to Texas-Tyler's Drew Reid/Edward Timponi.
Women's Results
Singles – Flight #1
Rachel Houston opened the event with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Schreiners' Teresa Gaiten and then advanced to the semifinals after a 6-2, 6-1, victory over McMurry's Dana LeMieux. Houston fell in the semifinals to Texas-Tyler's Amy Friesenhahn, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Singles – Flight #2
Mindy Tiu easily moved the second round with a 6-0, 6-0, win over Sul Ross State's Melanie Bianquiz, but fell in a three-set battle to Mary Hardin-Baylor's Mallory Aarhus in her attempt to reach the semifinals. Houston lost to Aarhus, 2-6, 6-4, 10-5.
Singles – Flight #3
Megan Tan advanced to the semifinals after a pair of easy wins to open the event. In the first round, Tan downed Schreiners's Kelley Spahn, 6-0, 6-0, and then bounced Ozarks' Tara Richards, 6-1, 6-1, in the second round. Tan's run was ended with a 6-0, 6-2, loss to Texas-Tyler's Jessica Blundell in the semifinals.
Singles – Flight #4
Jean Jean Gwo became the first-ever Comet female to win a flight at the ASC Individuals, downing Texas-Tyler's Ashley Albro, 6-2, 7-5, in the title game. Gwo was the No. 2 seed and received a first-round bye and then handled Schreiner's Lindsay Fox, 6-1, 6-0, in the second round. In the semifinals, Gwo defeated Hardin-Simmons' Genene Haddad, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, to advance to the finals.
Singles – Flight #5
Cindy Tiu received a first-round bye and then downed Schreiner's Lynne Collenback, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6, in the second round to advance to the semifinals. In the semis, Tiu defeated Mary Hardin Baylor's AshLee Bilbo, 6-3, 6-2, before falling to Texas-Tyler's Brittany Trich in the finals, 6-3, 6-1.
Singles – Flight #6
Lauren Diaz slid into the second round after a first-round bye and then downed Texas Lutheran's Jennifer Koepp, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the semifinals. In that match, Diaz fell to Texas-Tyler's Morgan Wilkins, 7-5, 6-3.
Doubles – Flight #1
Houston and Tan opened with an 8-1 win over Ozarks' Tara Richards/Chelsea Glasscock before falling in the second round. Houston/Tan were eliminated with an 8-5 loss to Hardin-Simmons' Lauren Jay/Genene Haddad.
Doubles – Flight #2
The twin sisters of Cindy and
Mindy Tiu held off Schreiner's Kelley Spahn/Lindsay Fox, 8-4, to advance to the second round and then picked up an 8-4 win over McMurry's Brandy Curry/Sydney Gonzales, who had a first-round bye, to advance to the semifinals. The Tius then fell to Hardin-Simmons' Morgan Rainer/Angie Nahn, 8-6, in the semis.
Doubles – Flight #3
Gwo and
Alisha Lorren received a first-round bye and then downed Howard Payne's Emilee Stephens/Jenna Johnson, 8-4, to advance to the semifinals. After an 8-5 win over Texas-Tyler's Emily Evans/Morgan Wilkins, Gwo/Lorren dropped the title match, 6-3, 0-6, 10-4, to Mary Hardin-Baylor's Chaley Shiffler/Angelie Juaneza.
The Comet women return to the courts next weekend as they travel to Tyler for the ITA Southwest Regional Invitational, Sept. 23-26. The UTD men will compete in the men's edition of the ITA Southwest Regional Invitational, Sept .30-Oct. 2 in San Antonio.
