TYLER, TX (04.28.12) - The UT Dallas men's tennis team had its season come to an end Saturday morning with a 5-0 loss to rival Texas-Tyler, 5-0, in the American Southwest Conference Semifinals.
The Comets (now 11-4) had advanced to the semis after a 5-0 win over ASC West champion Mary Hardin-Baylor Friday morning.
ASC QUARTERFINALS - UTD 5, UMHB 0 (BOX SCORE)
The Comets needed just two singles wins after sweeping doubles and did so quickly as the Comets sailed to a 5-0 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor to open the American Southwest Conference Tournament Friday morning.
UTD needed little time to grab a quick 3-0 lead on the Cru after sweeping doubles. The tandem of
Matthew Davis and
Dustin Foster stormed to an 8-3 win over UMHB's Joshua Pownall/Will Summers at No. 1 doubles.
Bryan Leib and
Ian Lucio earned an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles over the Cru duo of Collin Davies/T.J. Kittrell, and Guilherme Portela and
Sander Kaasjager picked up an 8-3 win over UMHB's John Martin/James Turner at No. 3 doubles.
Portela was the first Comet to complete his match after downing Martin, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6 singles to give the Comets a 4-0 advantage. Foster finished the match with a 6-0, 6-1, win over Garrett Pekar at No. 3 singles. Kaasjager was a set up (6-4, 1-0) on Turner at No. 4 singles and
David Yeh was heading to a third at No. 5 with Davies after splitting the first two sets, 1-6, 6-2. Davis and Leib were each down a set at No.1 and No. 2 singles, respectively when the match concluded.
ASC SEMIFINALS - UTT 5, UTD 0 (BOX SCORE to come)
The Comets found themselves in the reverse situation in Saturday's semifinal round as UTD dropped all three doubles matches en route to a 5-0 loss to rival Texas-Tyler.
Lucio and Leib opened doubles play with an 8-1 loss to UTT's Robert Hodous/Kevin Wright at No. 2. Davis and Foster then fell 8-5 at No. 1 doubles to Patriots' Ryan Spencer/Kevin Singer. UTT's Doug Kierstead/Joey Hendrie downed Portela and Kaasjager, 8-3,a t No. 3 doubles to complete the doubles' sweep.
In singles play, all six Comets were handed first-set losses with four UTD players going down, 6-0. But it was Yeh and Portela that were the first handed losses. Yeh fell to Kierstead, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5 singles and Foster was downed by Wright, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 3 singles.
Portela was honored after the event as part of the All-Tournament Team.
