Comets Roll Past UT-Tyler, Improve To 9-1 At Home This Season

RICHARDSON, TX (10.21.14) - For as much trouble the UT Dallas volleyball team has had on the road this season, there is no place like home for the Comets this fall as UTD cruised past Texas-Tyler, 3-0, in American Southwest Conference play Tuesday night. The Comets avenged a 3-1 road loss at UT-Tyler earlier in the season.

The Comets (now 15-8, 9-4 ASC) improved to 9-1 at home and has now won eight straight home matches after rolling to a 25-10, 25-20, 25-13 win over UT-Tyler (now 13-8, 10-3 ASC). With the win, UTD draws within a match of the third-place Patriots with three matches left on the conference schedule. The Comets return to action Friday at 6 p.m. as they host No. 24-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor.

After a slow start to the opening set, the Comets used an 8-0 run on the service of setter Kayla Jordan to pull ahead 16-7 after Taylour Toso kill. UTD hit .500 as a team in the first set, collecting 12 kills to just one error in 22 attempts. Toso and Michelle Toro helped set the tone for the match, each amassing four kills in the first set.

The Comets cooled off in the second set, hitting just .196 as a team, but got seven kills from Meredith Crawford and three more kills from Toso to pull away late after the Patriots drew with two points, 20-18. UTD used four blocks in the second set and took advantage of nine Patriots errors to grab a 2-0 lead.

UTD regained its form in the third and final set, hitting .393 as a team with 13 kills and just two errors. Jordan, Toso and Holyn Handley each pitched in three kills as the Comets completed the sweep.

Crawford led the Comets with 10 kills while Handley had nine kills and Toso finished with eight kills. Jordan, the ASC's leader in assists per set, averaged better than 10 assists per set as she finished with 31 assists. Handley led UTD with 12 digs while libero Bethany Werner had 10 digs. Toso had a match-high five blocks. UTD hit .323 for the match with nine blocks and six service aces.
