Women Open Road Trip With 71-54 Win Over Concordia Texas

AUSTIN, TX (01.15.15) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team picked up its ninth win in the last 10 games Thursday night with a 71-54 win at Concordia Texas in American Southwest Conference play

Leading 36-29 at the half, the Comets (12-2, 8-1 ASC) used an 18-3 run to open the second half and never looked back. Amber Brown led all scorers with 17 points while Madi Hess pitched in 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists as UTD earned its third straight win.

The Comets never trailed in the contest, but could not extend their lead by more than three points until the 12:40 mark of the opening half when Iemah Wallace-Perry hit a pair of free throws to give UTD a 16-11 advantage. The Comets extended is first-half lead to as many as eight on two occasions before both teams struggled offensively late in the half. Neither team scored in the final 1:34 of the first half.

As has become commonplace for the Comets as of late, they opened the second half strong. UTD held the Tornados to just 1-of-13 from the field over the first nine minutes of the second half, grabbing its largest lead of the night, 54-32, with 11:09 left to play after a Micaela Gonzalez layup. CTX would draw within 10 points late in the game before the Comes finished the contest on a 13-3 run.

UTD shot 43.6 percent (24-of-55) from the field, hitting just 4-of-13 three-pointers (30.8%), and tied a school record and matched its own ASC mark for most free throws without a miss as a team, going 19-for-19 at the line.

Brown finished the game 5-for-7 from the field, hitting her only three-point try, and was 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. She added seven rebounds and four assists. Hess was 4-for-7, hitting 1-of-2 three-pointers, and was 7-for-7 from the charity stripe. Ashley Shaw led UTD with eight rebounds as the Comets out-rebounded CTX, 45-33.

Next up for the Comets is a road game at Mary Hardin-Baylor Saturday afternoon. Game time is 1 p.m. in Belton.
