RICHARDSON, TX (11.14.15) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team kicked off the 2015-16 season Saturday afternoon with a 67-58 home win over Schreiner as part of UTD's campus-wide Homecoming celebration.
The Comets (now 1-0) got a game-high 16 points from
Madison Steele while
Micaela Gonzalez added 12 points and 10 rebounds for a "double-double".
Kelsey Scibek came off the bench to round out the Comets in double figures with 11 points.
UTD and the Mountaineers both came out strong the first period with the Schreiner grabbing a 21-17 advantage at the first break. However, a shut-down second half by the Comet defense helped UTD grab a slim 33-32 lead at the break. UTD shot just 33.3 percent (9-of-27) from the field in the opening half, going 0-for-7 from three-point range.
The Comets nearly set a school record for free attempts in the game, bolstered by 24 free shots in the second half alone as UTD slowly pulled away from the Mountaineers. While the Comets struggled from the field in teh second half, hitting just 10-of-33 shots (33.3%) and only 1-of-8 three-point attempts (12.5%), UTD would limit the Mountaineers to just 25.9 percent accuracy over the final 20 minutes to secure the win. The Comets outscored SU, 12-7, in a defensive second half and pulled away with a 22-19 fourth frame.
UTD would finish the game 28-of-45 from the foul line, ending one attempt shy of the school mark of 46 set against Schreiner in 2000. The Comets were 19-of-60 from the field (31.7%) and hit just 1-of-15 from three-point range (6.7%). UTD out-rebounded the Mountaineers, 52-42.
For SU (now 0-2), Dyamond Puebla scored 12 points while Cassandra Aleman finished with 10 points. The Mountaineers shot 30.5% (18-of-59) form the field, hitting 4-of-23 three-pointers (17.4%), and were 18-of-23 (78.3%) from the foul line.
The Comets will start their three-game road trip next Friday when they face Eastern University as part of a classic hosted by Kean College in Staten Island, N.J.
