Box Score UNION, NJ (11.20.15) - Despite grabbing a big early lead, the UT Dallas women's basketball team had to rally from behind to earn a 67-62 win over Eastern University Friday as part of the Kean Classic.
The Comets (now 2-0) will next play at 1 p.m. (Central) Saturday against the winner of Friday night's between host Kean University and College of Staten Island.
Madison Steele finished the game with a team-best 13 points along with seven rounds while
Zavier Landry had 10 points and eight steals, one shy of the school record. The Comets shot just 32.1 percent (25-of-78) from the field, hitting 4-of-20 three-pointers (20%), and again struggled from the foul line, hitting 13-of-22 free shots (59.1%). The Comets did force 32 EU turnovers in the contest, collecting 16 steals, and out-rebounded the Eagles, 50-44.
UTD snagged a 15-2 lead after the opening period and led by as many as 16 points early in the second half before the Eagles (now 2-1) mounted a furious fourth-period comeback. With the Comets leading EU, 47-34, entering the final frame, the Eagles used an 18-5 over the first 4:29 of the fourth period to knot the game, 52-52, after a Taylor Price three-point play. EU took its first lead of the game with 4:46 left as Price hit the first of two free throws to give the Eagles a 55-54 advantage.
After the two teams traded turnovers,
Jaylon McClure would give the Comets back lead with a jumper with 4:05 left. The two teams would then three more times before UTD was forced the tie the game, 60-60, after a free throw by
Alyssa Crockett with 36 seconds remaining. UTD would then end the game on a 7-2 run, hitting 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch as the Eagles missed their only two field goal attempts in the final 30 seconds of the game.
For EU, Reggie Robinson finished with 20 points while Price added 17 points, 15 of which came in the second half. The Eagles shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58), making just 4-of-14 three-pointers (28.6%), and were 10-of-15 (66.7%) from the free-throw line.
