RICHARDSON, TX (11.21.15) – Make it two in a row for the young UTD men's basketball team, after a second straight convincing home win over a deep and athletic opponent.
The Comets (2-0) used a big second half Saturday afternoon to pull away from American Southwest Conference foe Concordia Texas, 93-76, in a non-conference matchup at the UTD Activity Center Saturday afternoon, handing the Tornados (2-1) their first loss of the season.
UTD used a late 16-8 run in the first half to take a 44-36 lead into the dressing room, then stretched the advantage out to 20 points (65-45) with a 21-9 run to open the second period and held firm the rest of the game.
Concordia cut the lead down to 86-72 with 3:42 remaining , but
Reagan Keogh nailed a couple of free throws at the other end and the Tornados never got any closer than 15 again.
Fifty-five fouls were called in the up-tempo game with the two teams combining for 66 trips to the free throw line. UTD earned 25 points at the charity stripe while CTX was 22-of-32. The Tornados connected on just 4-of-19 three point attempts while UTD was 6-of-14. The Comets outshot the Tornados, 50.8-39.1 percent from the field.
UTD had five players finish in double figures, led by
Kyle Coulter's 17 points. Freshman Kailin Bray came off the bench to score 16 points in his first collegiate game
The Comets also got 14 from
Reagan Keogh while
Jon Hatcher and
Caleb Banks scored 11 each. Hatcher, Keogh and Colter each had seven boards as the Comets took a 45-38 advantage in rebounding. Bray and
Chase Davis added six each.
UTD play their next five dates on the road, including a Dec. 5 ASC opener at The University of the Ozarks. The Comets return home for an ASC showdown with Howard Payne on Jan. 2.
