Micaela Gonzalez had 21 points and 14 rebounds as she sparked the UT Dallas women's basketball team to a 83-65 win over host Kean Saturday afternoon to wrap up the Kean Classic.
The Comets (now 3-0) trailed early, but grabbed a lead late in the second quarter and never looked back as they have now opened a season 3-0 for the sixth straight season. UTD will to open the new season with a fourth consecutive victory Tuesday afternoon when they visit No.23-ranked Chicago. Tip-off is 4 p.m. in Chicago.
Gonzalez hit 7-of-11 shots from the field, 2-of-4 three-pointers, and went 5-for-6 from the foul line as she recorded a new career high for points and matched her career best for rebounds.
Zavier Landry added 16 points, and a team-best five assists, while
Madison Steele finished with 13 points and Alissa Greene had 12 points to round out four Comets in double digits.
After getting the opening bucket of the game from Landry, the Comets fell behind Kean by as many as eight points in the opening period twice before finishing the first frame down 22-17. The Cougars regained a seven-point advantage, 25-18, with 7:59 left in the second period before the Comets would finish the half on an 18-9 run to grab a 36-34 lead at the break, thanks to a Greene lay up with 43 seconds left before halftime.
Kean (now 2-1) tied the game with a jumper by Marajiah Bacon on the first possession of the second half, but the Comets would not trail over the final 20 minutes. Leading 59-52 heading into the final period, the Comets snagged their first double-digit lead of the contest, 64-52, on a three-pointer by Greene with 8:41 left to play. UTD would extend its lead to as many as 20 points in the final two minutes of the game.
UTD finished the game shooting 50.9 percent (29-of-57) from the floor, connecting on 4-of-12 (33.3%) three-pointers, and shot 70 percent (21-of-30) from the free-throw line. The Comets dominated the boards, outrebounding Kean, 52-28, forced 16 turnovers.
For Kean, Jante Bracewell finished with 20 points to lead three Cougars in double figures. Jaquetta Owens had 19 points and Bacon added 18 points.Kean shot 40.3 percent (27-of-67) from the field, hitting just 1-of-16 (6.3%) from beyond the arc, and shot 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from the charity stripe.
