CHICAGO, IL (11.24.15) - The University of Texas at Dallas women's basketball team, which moved into the Top 25 of the
USA Today Division III national poll Tuesday afternoon, fell from the ranks of the unbeaten after No. 19 University of Chicago bombed the Comets with nine three-pointers in a 75-46 road loss.
The Comets (3-1), who wrapped up their six-day cross-country road trip against the Maroons, debuted at No. 23 in the poll this week. UTD, however, simply could not keep up with Chicago's (4-0) perimeter attack, as the Maroons buried all nine shots in the first three quarters, including buzzer beaters at the end of the each of the first three periods. UTD did not hit a single three-point shot in 10 attempts.
UTD, which had several players slowed by a stomach illness after a suspect meal Monday night, fell in a deep hole right out of the gate with Chicago jumping out to a 25-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, thanks to four three-point shots. The Maroons added two more long-range shots in the second period, extending their lead to 41-20 at intermission.
UTD was able to put together a 12-4 run to open the third quarter, cutting the lead down to 45-32 on a
Kelsey Scibek layup at 5:19. But Chicago answered and got another buzzer beater to end the third period still up by 21 at 59-38.Â
The Maroons led by as many as 27 points (67-40 with 7:27 left in the game) and UTD could not get much closer the rest of the way.
The UTD defense, which had been solid in the first three games of the season, was victimized with 53.2 percent shooting (25-or-47) by the Maroons. The Comets managed to hit just 32.7 percent (16-of-49) of their shots from the field.
Micaela Gonzalez finished as the only Comet in double figures with 12 points. Madison Dunbar, who had two three-pointers, led the Maroons with 16. The two teams were even with 29 rebounds apiece with
Zavier Landry leading UTD with seven boards.
After a six-day road trip, the Comets will take a break before returning home for a non-conference home date with Austin College at 7 pm on Wednesday, Dec. 2.
