LONGVIEW, TX (02.12.15) - Senior guard
Matthew Medell became the eighth Comet to eclipse 1,000 career points Thursday night as the UT Dallas men's basketball team cruised to an 8-50 road win over LeTourneau in American Southwest Conference play.
With 10 points in Thursday's win at LETU, Medell now has 1,009 career points in his four years with the Comets and can move into seventh place all-time Saturday afternoon as UTD (now 16-6, 11-6 ASC) visits ASC-leader East Texas Baptist (18-4, 13-4 ASC). Game time is 3 p.m. in Marshall.
The ASC's top three-point shooting team this season, the Comets hit just 7-of-23 three-pointers (30.4%) at LETU, but did not need the outside shot to extend its winning streak to a season-high four games. UTD did, however, hit 5-of-11 three-pointers in the opening half as the Comets snagged a dominant 40-18 lead at the break.
Leading 14-11 with 9:50 left in the first half, the Comets would mount a 17-3 run over the next six-plus minutes to take control of the game. UTD secured its first 20-point lead with 1:20 remaining before the break when
Rafael Farley drained a trey to give the Comets a 37-16 advantage.
The Comets hit just 2-of-12 three-pointers over the final 20 minutes but continued to pull away. Farley scored 13 of his game-high 22 points in the second half.
Farley ended the game 6-of-15 from the field, hitting 3-of-9 three-pointers, and was 7-of-8 from the free-throw line.
Kyle Coulter, who scored 16 points in the first half, ended the night with 18 points along with a game-best eight rebounds. Freshman point guard
Caleb Banks finished with nine points and seven assists.
The Comets closed out the night shooting 41.9 percent (26-of-62) from the field and hit 22-of-26 (84.6%) from the foul line. UTD owned the boards, out-rebounding the Jackets, 50-26.
