RICHARDSON, TX (02.05.15) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team collected a season-high 20 offensive rebounds and dominated the rebounding battle overall, avenging an early season loss with a 67-53 American Southwest Conference win over Louisiana College Thursday night.
UTD (17-4, 13-3) finished the game on a 15-6 run to pull away from the Lady Wildcats (13-5, 10-5 ASC) in a game that put the Comets back firmly in second place in the ASC race with just over two weeks left in the regular season. UTD out-rebounded the Lady Wildcats, 55-39, on the night.
Sophomore
Micaela Gonzalez recorded her first "double-double" of the season, finishing with 10 points and a season-high 14 rebounds.
Ashley Shaw led all scorers with 16 points while
Christina Brosnahan came off the bench for 10 points.Â
The Lady Wildcats, who had defeated UTD 70-65 in the first ASC game of the season, kept the game close in the first half and cut UTD's lead down to 52-47 with 5:49 remaining. But after a Gonzalez free throw, a six-point swing that included a missed three-porter on one end and an
Amber Brown three on the other sparked the Comets' finish. Gonzalez and Shaw each hit layups over the next two minutes and UTD had a 60-47 lead with 3:38 left. LC did not score from the floor again until Karylon Thornton hit a jumper with :14 left.
UTD led the game for the first 15 minutes of the game, but built a lead that expanded to no more than 7 points after a
Madi Hess layup made it 11-4 at 13:13. LC then whittled away with an 11-4 run and finally overtook UTD, 16-15, at the 7:28 mark of the first half. The Lady Wildcats scored two unanswered baskets and had a 20-15 lead on the Comets at 6:38, but UTD answered with a 12-1 run and led 27-21 after a Brosnahan three-pointer at 5:00. The Comets finished the half outscoring LC 18-6 in the final 6:38.
The Lady Wildcats pulled to within 37-34 three minutes into the second half, but UTD answered with another 12-2 outburst and were up 49-36 at 11:14.
After four conference games in eight days, the Comets get a much-needed break. UTD's next game is next Thursday at LeTourneau. The Comets wrap up the regular season at home with games Feb. 19 and 21 against Concordia Texas and Mary Hardin-Baylor.
