RICHARDSON, TX (01.16.16) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team is now mired in its longest losing streak in four seasons after a 66-56 home loss to LeTourneau Saturday noon in American Southwest Conference.
The Comets (now 8-6, 2-4 ASC) dropped their fourth straight decision as they shot just 35 percent (21-for-60) against the visiting YellowJackets (11-6, 7-2). UTD will look to snap the skid Monday night as they visit Concordia Texas in ASC crossover play. Game time is 5:30 p.m. in Austin.
UTD got off to a rough start, falling behind 7-0 before scoring its first basket. At halftime, the Comets had committed more turnovers (11) than made field goals (8), shooting just 26.7 percent (8-of-30), and still trailed by seven (25-18) at the break. The Comets used a strong third period to rally within six points heading into the final frame, but LETU hit free throws down the stretch to ice the win.
Junior
Madison Steele was a bright spot for the Comets in the loss, accounting for nearly half of UTD offense. Steele finished the afternoon 10-for-16 from the field and 5-of-7 from the line to score a career-high 25 points, leading all scorers.
Micaela Gonzalez returned after missing Thursday's game to add 13 points as the only other Comet in double digits.
Nicolette Erkman grabbed a team-high six rebounds.
The Comets shot just 3-of-17 (17.6%) from three-point range, hitting three of their last four long shots of the afternoon, and were 11-of-13 (84.6%) as a team from the line, hitting 11 in a row to end the game. UTD ended the game with 15 turnovers, giving up the ball just four times in the second half. The Comets' current four-game losing streak is the longest since losing six straight contests during the 2012-13 season.
For LETU, leading scorer Crystal Jones had 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting with three treys while LaTanya Drakes came off the bench for 13 points. Drakes finished with a double-double, adding 10 rebounds, while Ashley Stephens collected a game-high 11 boards. The YellowJackets shot 40 percent (26-of-65) from the field, connecting on 6-of-21 three-pointers (28.6%), and were just 8-of-16 (50%) from the free-throw line. LETU out-rebounded the Comets, 46-37.
