Micaela Gonzalez hit the game-winning lay up with 3.9 seconds left to play as the UT Dallas women's basketball team picked up its first road win over Louisiana College in seven seasons with a 62-61 victory over the Lady Cats Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference East Division play.
The Comets (10-7, 4-5 ASC) kept their hopes for a 10th straight postseason trip alive with the win over LC after dropping five of the last six games, three of which by three points or less. UTD, still in fifth place in the ASC's East Division, now have eight games left in the regular season, six conference contests, and looks to string together several victories in the last month in order to qualify for its 10th straight ASC Championship Tournament.
UTD held a 49-41 lead heading into the final period only to watch the Lady Wildcats use an 8-0 run midway through the frame to grab a 55-54 advantage with 3:36 left to play. The two teams traded leads four times before LC would secure a three-point lead, 61-58, with 91 seconds left after a free throw by Brooke Jones.
After turnovers by each squad, the Comets drew within a point on a
Madison Steele lay up with 38 seconds left and LC's Romette Lombard missed a potential game-sealing three-pointer to set up Gonzalez' game-winner. After a timeout, the Comets quickly drove down the floor as Gonzalez bounced a lay up from just inside the right paint. LC took a quick timeout to advance the ball to half court, but failed to get a shot off.
Gonzalez finished wtih a game-high 20 points, posted her second 20-point performance of the season. She was 9-of-14 from the field and 2-for-4 from the foul line while adding six rebounds for UTD. Steele had 12 points as the only other Comet in double figures while
Jasmine Lopez had nine points, off three three-pointers,
Kendall Festervand had eight points and a team-best seven rebounds, including the board on Lombard's missed three-pointer for Gonzalez' game-winner.
The Comets shot 42.1 percent (24-of-57) from the field, hitting just 4-of-18 three-pointers (22.2%), while shooting 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the free-throw line. It was UTD's first win over Louisiana College in Pineville since a 64-62 victory over the Lady Cats on Jan. 29, 2009.
For LC (now 6-8, 4-3 ASC), Kortney Kling scored 14 points to lead three Lady Wildcats in double figures. LC shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) as a team, connecting on 7-of-16 three-pointers (43.8%), and shot 75 percent (6-of-8) from the line.
The Comets return to action Thursday as they visit Belhaven in non-conference action. Game time is 5:30 p.m. in Jackson, Miss.
