Mario Jelev has been named the American Southwest Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, announced by the league office Wednesday morning.
A native of Haltom City, Jelev was perfect in both singles and doubles as the Comets claimed two home victories and clinched a share of the ASC West Division title. Jelev was a 6-0, 6-1, winner at No. 5 singles and partnered with teammate
Hrudhay Ravula for an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles as the Comets downed McMurry, 5-4, Friday. Jelev then won a long straight-set contest Saturday in singles, 7-6, 6-3, and again teamed up with Ravula for an 8-6 win as UTD locked up the division with a 6-3 home win over Hardin-Simmons on Saturday. Jelev is a perfect 7-0 in singles play and 6-1 in doubles (all with Ravula) as the Comets have now won six straight matches.
The Comets (6-1, 4-0 ASC West) will look for a seventh straight victory Frdiay with they face Sul Ross State in Abilene. Match time is 2 p.m. on the campus of Hardin-Simmons.
