Kayla Reinhart scored 16 points in the fourth quarter to lift the UT Dallas women's basketball team to a 79-65 home win over Louisiana College Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference East Division play.
The Comets (15-3, 10-1 ASC) picked up their 13th win in 14 outings and, thanks to a little help from around the league, secured their 11th straight trip to the ASC Tournament next month. UTD will for a third win a row Thursday when the Comets host Belhaven to wrap up a four-game home stand. Game time is 1 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
Reihnart hit four three-pointers in the final quarter alone as she finished the contest with a game-high 22 points, adding a team-best seven rebounds and four assists, for the Comets.
Alyssa Crockett finished with 15 points, all in the first half, while
Nicolette Erkman came off the bench for 12 points.
Zavier Landry finished with seven points and eight assists.
The Comets held LC 0-11 from the field for the opening five minutes, taking a quick 14-1 lead, and never looked back. UTD would widen its lead to as many as 12 points in the second frame before settling for a 33-22 lead at the break. The visiting Wildcats (5-10, 4-5 ASC) got a lay up to start the third quarter to cut the UTD lead to nine points,but that would be last time the Comets lead by single digits for the rest of the game.
UTD's first 20-point lead of the afternoon came with 2:40 left in the third when
McKenzie Petty drained a three-pointer to give the Comets a 51-31 lead. Leading 53-41 after three periods, Reinhart took over to ice the win for the Comets. Reinhart would drain four three-pointers over a span of 2:55 as UTD pulled ahead 69-46 with 6:48 left to play. Reinhart added two more lay ups as she accounted for 16 of the Comets' 25 points in the fourth quarter.
The Comets ended the game shooting 39.2 percent (29-of-74), hitting 10-of-28 three-pointers (35.7%), and were 11-of-18 (61.1%) from the free-throw line. UTD out-rebounded the Wildcats, 50-44, and forced 17 turnovers.
UTD currently holds a 3.5-game lead over both LeTourneau and Texas-Tyler, which are each tied for second in the ASC East at 6-4,with five games left on the conference slate. LC sits alone in fourth place at 4-5 while Ozarks is now 4-7 after falling to divisional last place East Texas Baptist (1-8) Saturday. The ASC Tournament will be played Feb. 23-25 at the top seed from the ASC's West Division.
