SAN ANTONIO, TX (10.01.17) - The UT Dallas men's tennis team returned to action over the weekend as the Comets competed in the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, hosted by Trinity.

Three Comets earned at least one win in singles action in the main bracket while senior Albert Hernandez advanced to the quarterfinals before bowing out. Junior
Mario Jelev earned two singles victories before falling in the round of 16 while sophomore
Ashwin Vaithianathan claimed a first-round victory. In doubles play, the tandem of Vaithianathan and
Eric Chen earned two wins before falling in the quarterfinals.
Hernandez opened play with a 7-5, 6-2, win over Trinity's Clark Rivers and then downed Austin College's Calum Robe, 6-0, 6-3, in the second round. In the round of 16, Hernandez swept Texas-Tyler's Jose Currea, 6-1, 6-3, before falling top-seed and eventual singles champion Arthur Fagundes of Texas-Tyler, 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.
Jelev led off the event with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Hardin-Simmons' Griffin Weinkam before knocking off No. 8 seed Liam Crawley of Trinity in the second round, 6-4, 2-1 (ret.). Jelev's run ended in the round of 16 with a 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-4, loss to Texas-Tyler's Vinicio Hadlich.
Vaithianathan earned a 6-0, 6-0, win over Michael Boyd of HSU in the opening round before falling to Southwestern's Alec Baskerville, 4-6, 6-1, 11-9, in the second round.
Chen,
Giovanni Zamboni and
Ryan Morton each fell in the opening round of the singles bracket. Zamboni would later advance to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.
Vaithianathan and Chen opened doubles play with an upset of fifth-seeded Cameron Bisbarrow/Crawley of Trinity, 9-7, and then downed HSU's Levi Cook/Colin Hollingworth, 8-6, in the second round. In the quarters, then duo fell to third-seeded and eventual champion Fagundes/Pablo Gomez of Texas-Tyler, 8-3.
The duos of Jelev/Hernandez and Morton/Zamboni each fell in the opening round.
The Comets will continue their fall on Thursday, Oct. 12, when they host Seminole State College in an exhibition at the UTD Tennis Courts.
